And we were doing a course on pediatric trans health, and a nurse attended with her husband, who was just on as her guest. And he’s not in healthcare at all, but he sat through the course and came up to the educator afterward and cried. And they thanked the educator because their child is trans, and they learned so much from a non-healthcare perspective just from being on the ship and attending a CNE that the nurse didn’t have to attend. Knowing that it’s going to have a positive impact on their child’s life and their life as a family unit is what makes continuing education for nurses the most special.

NurseCon at Sea: Making Lasting Memories While Earning CNEs

I knew nurses were working so hard going through that, and I wanted to provide them with an education platform so they can get their courses for free. Once nurses attend our cruise, they can get their CNEs through that platform. And we will also be putting our courses from the cruise on that platform. If you can’t attend the event for whatever reason but are interested in those courses, you will take them and get the CNEs for free after the ship has sailed. All healthcare professionals, medical personnel, licensed/certified nurses, and nursing students are welcome to join. Likewise, even better, those aged 18 and over on the date of departure can bring along their spouses and family members.

Community & CNEs for Nurses

All medical staff are both certified and experienced. This extraordinary event is specifically tailored for nurses and nursing students, bringing them together to learn, exchange experiences, network, and enjoy themselves. With that, a lot of the cruise ships are like, “Oh, you know, we think it’s just like a nursing conference.” No, the energy is up there with like the Atlantis cruises. I have to credit my audience and the people that follow me, they bring this energy and just sense of community. It’s not just something I bring to them, it’s right when they get on the ship. We just have this relatability to one another that we just kind of break the ice with each other really, really quick.

Medical staff varies by ship size, but typically ships have a doctor and at least two nurses. The world's largest cruise ships may have two doctors and five or six nurses. River ships and small ships that hover close to shore have less staff since they can easily access health facilities on land. As a nurse, it’s our job to make everyone really, really comfortable.

Everyone in the nursing world can learn from each other even though you’re not from a specific specialty. No matter how many degrees you have or certifications, no one’s better than anyone else. When you board a cruise ship you become part of a community of people of all ages who will be together for several days, a week or more.
